The 192th Bulgarian rose festival
Bulgaria is famous for a lot of things like nature, hospitality, and good wine. But the most famous of all is the Bulgarian rose. You can find roses in many places in the world but the famous variety Rose Damascene (also known as the Bulgarian rose) is the best in Bulgaria, Iran, and Turkey.

Bulgarian rose tradition
The oils made from it and used in the fragrance industry are knowns as the best in the world. Bulgarians are proud of their roses and you can see them everywhere. People are keeping the best place in their yards for them. We are using them in rituals, celebrating with them and keeping the tradition.
Inspired by this we decided to visit the famous Rose festival in Kazanluk. Located in the beautiful Rose Valley, Kazanluk has been a host of this festival for the 192nd time. The is less than two hours drive from Burgas Coliving so after breakfast we took the car and at lunch, we were there.
Rose festival in Kazanluk
It was crazy hot there, temperature was above 32 degrees and the sun was so strong. We decided to drink something fresh in the city center and to see the preparation. We have noticed that this event is something huge for the local people. They have waiting and preparing for this weekend the whole year. And you can see their smile when this small city is alive again, with streets full of people. Bulgarian and foreigners mixed with roses in the crowdy pedestrian zone. Lovely. We tried some refreshing cocktails with roses inside and went to the hotel. Just before reaching hotel, we saw a field full of roses. We stop the car and make a tiny walk between the rows. And of course, we have made a tiny photo session. Just for 3 hours.

Festival events
The festival is with a lot of small and big events during the weekend. They have a Miss Rose contest, concerts, Rose Wine exhibition, a Fragrance exhibition, and many others.
But the most interesting of them is the rose picking.
You are going to the rose fields where the local people dressed in traditional clothes are welcoming you. They are dancing, playing music and making some rituals. You can see the old school process of boiling the roses, and try the rose water. There are a lot of products made by roses that you can try or buy. We have tried alcohol shots with roses which were amazing.
Then you can enter in the fields and start picking the roses. It is a magical thing. You are walking in rows surrounded by magnificent roses and amazing fragrances everywhere. Gorgeous
You have a tiny basket that you can fill with roses and keep for yourself. Can you imagine the fragrance in the car on the way back to the coliving?
